The Gyro-X Car Article: Copyright and Other Issues

I was sent a photocopy of this article by a gentleman who was developing a gyro-stabilized vehicle. He also sent me a video tape of his vehicle. Sadly, I have lost both the name and address of this person and his project. I would be delighted if he got in touch. In the meantime, I wanted to let as many people as possible to see this article for themselves.

I decided to place the article on the web as scanned images, rather than transcribed text, partly to show that the item was genuine, partly to prevent wholesale copying of the text. This raises an interesting question: Who holds the copyright on articles that first appeared in Science and Mechanics, September, 1967?

Back then it was common for a magazine to commission first serial rights. In other words, the copyright remained with the author of the article. I have made good faith, but so far unsuccessful, efforts to contact the copyright holder. I believe that my presentation of the material here is justified on academic and scientific grounds. If any parties believe they are the legal copyright holder and wish me to remove the article from the Internet, they should let me know.
