Illustration of the 'open' network problem
for guests at two upscale hotels

Note: This web page was created to display screen shots that indicate network exposure for hotel guests using high speed Internet access. The actual names of computers, folders and files have been changed to protect the owners of these systems. However, the screen shots themselves are genuine and were captured during the summer of 2004.

1. This screen shot was obtained by turning on a wireless-enabled Windows 2000 laptop in the lobby of an upscale hotel in a major metropolitan area (AAA rating of 4 Diamonds and regular room rate over $200 per night). The user employed no tools and simply clicked on Network in Windows Explorer. Note that the hotel required no login prior to network connection and this same wireless network was accessible two blocks away from the hotel building.

2. This screen shot was obtained by connecting a Windows 2000 laptop to wired high speed Internet access in the guest room of an upscale hotel in a major metropolitan area (regular room rate over $350 per night). The user employed no tools and simply clicked on Network in Windows Explorer. Note the presence of what appears to be medical data. A medical conference was being held in the hotel at the time this screen was captured.
